I drove up to Boreas Pass, just outside Breckenridge, from Denver this past Saturday to photograph the aspens, which are now at their most vivid colors. Last year, I waited until the middle of October to drive up there, and most of the leaves were gone, although the trees in Breckenridge itself were still beautiful. Boreas Pass Road, seen in the photograph on the left, is not paved, but still drivable, with lots of places to pull over and admire the scenery. There were a lot of cars up there, but still plenty of room for all.
Photographs of the aspens changing color are not popular with the art crowd, since most of them look the same. I find myself taking all kinds of photographs up there, and most of them do look alike, but they are still pretty, and it is a good excuse to drive up to the mountains and get outside before winter starts, which up there will be very soon indeed.
The best thing about driving Boreas Pass Road is that it gives you a beautiful mountain backdrop, as seen in the photograph on the left. Just taking photos of a stand of aspens in the middle of the forest can get pretty old pretty fast. Also, once you have taken several thousand or so photographs of those aspens, you can head down to Breckenridge, my favorite mountain town, which last Saturday was in the middle of celebrating Oktoberfest, which is always fun. Plus, the trees in the town have not yet changed color, which means another trip into the mountains in a few weeks will be required. I can't wait.
