Black Friday and Cyber Monday are behind us, and so we are now into the heart of the holiday shopping season. I drove up to Boulder from Denver this past Saturday, and the Pearl Street Mall was all decked out in lights, packed with holiday shoppers and diners. I popped into the Boulder Bookstore, located on the right in the photograph on the left, and it was so crowded, I began to feel claustrophobic. Good to know that so many people - at least in the City of Boulder - still value and purchase books.
I especially like walking around Boulder during the holidays. They do a tremendous job decorating the downtown area, and the place buzzes with energy, with no small thanks to the thousands of University of Colorado students who frequent the area. It is also fun to be so close to the Flatirons, as seen in the background of the photograph on the right. Not that I was tempted to go on a late evening hike. Just looking at them from Pearl Street was quite enough.
As usual, there were street musicians and buskers on the mall, performing for tips. The fellow in the photograph on the left was juggling lighted torches, and had attracted quite a crowd. On Saturday nights during the summer, these street performers usually entertain the crowds until late into the evening. This time of year, after the sun sets, they are gone. You can't blame them - it is damn chilly at night around here this time of year. Which brings me to a question I have been asking myself for years. No matter how cold it is, there are many many people - especially men - around the Front Range of Colorado who insist on wearing shorts year round, even when it is below zero. What is the deal with that? Perhaps the altitude has affected their brains. It is as good an explanation as any.
