Denver's Underground Music Showcase Calling It Quits

Denver's Underground Music Showcase (The UMS) will be shutting down this year following its 2025 event. This music festival has been taking place on South Broadway here in Denver for the past 25 years. Despite sellout crowds, the organizers can no longer afford to put it on anymore, which is evidently a nationwide trend for music festivals these days. The final fete will be held Friday July 25th through Sunday, July 27th and will feature 200 local and national bands on 4 stages and at 12 venues. South Broadway, seen in the photograph above, is very popular with a young, hipster type crowd, and this festival is no doubt geared toward that demographic. And not surprisingly, I have never attended this event, although I have spent time in the neighborhood, which features many bars, restaurants, and shops often selling very unique (i.e. weird) items. This part of South Broadway is located in the Baker neighborhood, which is an historic district with hundreds of 19th Century brick homes and commercial buildings. One of those homes is the Coyle/Chase house at 532 West 4th Avenue, home of playwright Mary Chase, best known for writing the 1944 Broadway play Harvey, which was made into the 1950 movie starring Jimmy Stewart. And come to think of it, I just know I have seen a giant rabbit walking out of some of those South Broadway bars over the years, and now I know why.
