I went to the Tattered Cover last night to hear Richard Ford talk about his new book, Canada. Ford thanked the Tattered Cover effusively for supporting both books and their authors in these troubled times for the book industry. Although the Tattered Cover had to move out of its Cherry Creek location after its landlord raised the rent 1000%, it is still thriving at its new location (see photograph above) in the old Schwayder Theater on East Colfax Avenue in Denver. I was thinking about that this morning during a training session at the DU Bookstore on selling Apple i-Pads and Mac computers. The i-Pad makes it extremely easy (and tempting) to download and read most titles at a fairly low price, further eroding the sale of traditional books. The day might come when only a few grizzled senior citizens actually own and read books. By whom I mean my fellow Bookstore employee, Wally, and his Churchill tomes. Keep the faith, Wally!
