Defeated, But Not Conquered by Calculus

John, my friend and colleague at the DU Bookstore, tells me there is a big difference between being defeated and being conquered, by calculus or anything else.  If you are conquered, you are "owned," and John is definitely not "owned" by anything.  He has discovered, as the rest of us have, that calculus is a foreign language not easily learned.  John has decided to drop his calculus class here at the University of Denver, which is a shame, considering how much we all use calculus in our daily lives.  Even my bank now requires that I calculate the derivatives of random numbers to access my account.  Good luck with that, John!
